Dr. Cobey is a world-renowned expert on honey bee queen insemination, and shares her years of experience teaching and practicing this important technical skill, vital to modern bee breeding.

Speaker Details:

Dr. Suasn Cobey is a world-renowned expert on honey bee queen insemination, and shares her years of experience teaching and practicing this important technical skill, vital to modern bee breeding. Susan has 30 years’ experience single-handedly developing and maintaining a closed breeding program to produce New World Carniolan bee stock.


Dr. Cobey is an acknowledged international authority in the field of instrumental insemination and honey bee breeding. Her focus is honey bee stock improvement. She founded and maintained the New World Carniolan Closed Population Breeding Program for 40 generations. Her experience includes management of honey bee research laboratories at the Ohio State University and University of California, Davis. Her work at Washington State University includes enhancement of honey bee stocks and improvement of colony health through breeding. Germplasm, collected from honey bees in their native European range, has been incorporated into U.S. breeding stocks to enhance the U.S. gene pool.


Dr. Cobey currently operates Honey Bee Insemination Service, providing training, consultation and specialized equipment for instrumental insemination. She provides information in presentations, publications and instructional material, worldwide to promote honey bee stock improvement.
